Welcome to Autumn
Leaves |
|
A very rare (but broken) oval dish development sample manufactured by TG Green, Church Gresley. A similar style dish had been made by Johnson Brothers (with a slight recess to the inner rim) until the stoneware cookware contract was awarded to TG Green. A thin sided oval dish was then produced for M&S until all Autumn Leaves cookware was eliminated in the 1991 Marks and Spencer summer sales. It is highly unlikely that this particular style of dish actually appeared in M&S stores. For further info and comparison of dishes please scroll down... |

Above you can just see a small chip below
the middle bud of the pattern. As a display item this dish is 'perfect'. |

Here is the thin sided dish, still being produced during the summer sales of 1991. |

Oval Dish with thick rim
- after Marks & Spencer had cancelled the Autumn Leaves
contract. T.G. Green were, however, still producing the Harvest range for
Marks & Spencer. The assumption made is that any
surplus dishes, destined to be used for the Harvest range, were
instead decorated with remaining Autumn Leaves patterns. T.G.Green went to
a great trouble to erase the manufacturing date
(typically stamped '09:91', indicating
September 1991) from Autumn Leaves
cookware made by them
after Summer 1991. Careful cleaning reveals that this
style of dish was being manufactured by TG Green as late as January 1992,
at least 6 months after M&S had eliminated all stoneware cookware from
their stores. None of these later oval dishes carry an Autumn Leaves 2286 identification mark - except the solitary broken development sample in this auction. Interestingly there is no date stamp on this broken sample. |
